cosmosworks Can I define displacement to get force?

I have Cosmosworks, have not been trained yet, but I was playing with it using a simple flat stock spring. I modeled a piece of .030 thick blue temper x 1/8 wide and 3/4 long with a slight raised round pad on both ends for cosmos. I restrained one end on the pad I want to tell cosmosworks to deflect the opposite pad by .050 and have it tell me what force it will generate. Then I will simply increase the material thickness until I get the force I'm looking for. Is this possible?
thanks,
Tom

Fairly new to CW myself, but I know it's possible. You can get reaction forces and free body forces from results.

One possible solution is to have two bodies in an assembly, one a dummy contacting body that moves the spring end. Then you can get the contact forces.

If I picture this correctly, force is 1:1 proportional to width and 8:1 proportional to thickness.

There is also optimization, but I have not played with that yet.

So... Since you know the force you want and the displacement you want... Why not just apply that force and vary thickness until you get the displacement you want? I don't see a difference in ease or end result.

handleman, your right, I could do that. But in some cases I don't really know what force I want. But I would like to know what force I would get given the size of the flat spring and the displacememt. So in the Cosmos menu there is no displacement option, so I guess the simple answere is I can't do it this way.

TheTick, I will experiment with your suggestion, and maybe the help or tutorial will give me some hints

Thanks,
Tom

Look at te small and large displacement tutorials. If you're feeling adventurous, also look at the "Advanced Design Scenario" tutorial.

TheTick, where do I find these tutorials?
Thanks

Tutorials are under "Help". Funy thing about CW is that the help is not available until a part or assembly is open (and the addin is active).
