What is the difference between Projection system and co-ordinate system. Is the "Northing and Easting" same to Latitude and Longitude? can anyone please give me the reasons behind why we use certain system?

maybe creates a flat x,y plane...plus it's easier in the field to think in real terms of ft or meters instead of degrees lat, degrees lon.

msucog, thank you very much.

dik, i have tried that and i became more confused.

UTM is a 'modern' takeoff of the Mercator projection. This is a map where the longitude and latitude form a square grid. To do this, it is necessary to distort the shape of the landforms, with the greatest distortion occurring furthest from the equator. A straight line draw on this map (projection) is a true course (used to be used for navigation, way back when).

UTM divides the world into a set of zones and can define a point on the surface (or underground for mines) that is unique and universal.
