Hi,

I have been trying to find out how to calculate the distance a ball bearing has travelled into a flat surface due to permanent deformation.

I can calculate the indentation due to a given force but cant work out the indentation left after the force has been taken away.

The flat metal is made from 304steel and the force is 2000N. Bearing diameter is 7mm.

Thanks in advance.

can you figure out how much impact energy is converted to elastic strain energy (and hence released) and how much is plastic ?

This is similar to Brinell hardness testing or Rockwell B. I would look into the theory behind these tests for guidance on how you can calculate this.

Is the ball material tungsten carbide? It probably should be.
