Construction of Wingwall for box cuvlert

I am designing a 12x3 cast in place box culvert, wherein the south wingwalls need to constructed in sync with the slopewall of an adjacent bridge. The problem is that the bridge slopewall will be built 12-18 months after the construction of the box culvert. What are my options for the construction of the slopewall?

Is construction of the box without the wingwall feasible, in anticipation that they will build the wingwall plus slopewall monolithically in 12-18 months?
Do I need to have some sort of riprap at the wingwall locations if the wingwall is to be constructed at later date OR can I get away without any protection here?

Has anyone had this situation before?

Also, why do the culvert wingwall and bridge slope wall have to be monolithic? Even without knowing the definition of a slopewall, I can imagine forming and pouring this monolithic could be a nightmare.

Concerning your question about constructing a cast-in-place box culvert without a wingwall... yes you could do that. But erosion would quickly make a mess of the earthwork that the missing wingwall should have contained.

I agree with SRE about pouring the wall as a monolithic piece - it's a bad idea to connect 2 structures together with something as flimsy as a wingwall. Why not just pour the wingwall for the culvert and then pour the bridge wall up to it (with a joint filler board in between, of course) when the bridge is built?

They do not have to be monolithic, that was one of the proposed solutions by the civil/drainage engineers and I was checking the feasibility for it.

Yes, I am concerned about erosion as well, and in the scenario where the box is built without the wingwall, can I use riprap to contain the erosion? This can be either regular stone riprap or grouted riprap.

Yes, using PJF between the 2 is definitely an option, and I will be suggesting this during my meeting.

Yes, you could use riprap for erosion control until the bridge is constructed. But since the culvert wingwall and bridge "slopewall" don't have to be monolithic, why not just construct the culvert wingwall and be done with that part of the project?

That be my preference as well, but I just want to consider all possibilities since we are the subconsultants on this project, and might have to follow the lead of the primary, if they believe that the alternative is feasible in terms of design and construction, in spite of not being the most pragmatic approach.

a sketch might shed some light as I have no idea what your configuration is. It may be that riprap could work, or if the slope is too steep it wouldn't work. does the wingwall just convey flow or does it also act as a retaining wall? could failure of the slope be a risk to the bridge? is the bridge already constructed? or not?

Might be important to carefully refer on the drawings to Phase I and Phase II construction as well. Sometimes, they run out of money and Phase II doesn't get built, and if it doesn't and that causes Phase I to fail, you are covered.

I dont have a good enough sketch that depicts this. There are no grading plans right now.

No, the bridge will be constructed an year after the construction of the box culvert.
