Construction Contractors License 2

Has anyone ever taken a heavy equipment contractor's license exam(state of LA). As a mechanical engineer, is this something i need to study for?

Is it law references or common since math that an engineer could figure out?

If and when your application is approved, you will receive an Exam approval letter. This will authorize you to sit for the exam and provide you with your exam ID number. There are two exams that must be passed to obtain a Louisiana contractor’s license. The first is a general business and law exam, while the other will depend on the type of license and classifications selected in your application.

The business and law exam is a one-hour, open-book exam. This will cover topics such as licensing, bidding and estimating, contract management, job safety, tax basics, and other similar topics.

As for the trade exam, this can vary depending on which classification is applied for. These can be open-book or closed-book, and range from 50 to 115 questions. You can read a full breakdown of the exams and classifications here.

In order to pass, you’ll need to get a 70% or higher. So how long do you have to wait to get your results? You don’t. Exams are taken on the testing center computer, and you’ll know your score immediately. If you didn’t pass, you’ll have to wait 30 days to retake it.

But if you did, congratulations! You are now fully licensed to perform construction work in Louisiana! A confirmation of your contractor’s license will be coming in the mail soon.

I have a PE and a contractors license (different state). The contractors license exams aren't anywhere near the PE as far as difficulty, but if you show up without studying at all you will fail.

The LA board gave me a list of 20 books as reference to buy. Is there any study guide for something to focus on?

I don’t understand what I need to know for the test. Thank you.

I hate to be unhelpful, but... if you don't know what you need to know for the test, why are you taking the test?

If you have no experience in the trade you're trying to obtain a license in, the test will actually be pretty difficult and the license you obtain won't be very useful to you.

Well you started to thread asking whether or not you needed to study for a set of exams which are outside your field and typically are taken by professionals after a fair amount of experience, of which you have none. So. Ask bad questions, get bad answers.

Agree with SwinnyGG....
I'm a licensed General Contractor, a licensed Roofing Contractor and a licensed Professional Engineer. Further, I'm the principal author of one of the reference books used for many of the contractor exams in the US, including Louisiana.

You need to study for the exam. If you're not engrossed in the practice of the subject, then you need to study to get the nuances of what is being asked on the exams. Take a review course...it will help you get organized for the test.

On July 14 you created a thread asking if you should study for this exam, while clearly not knowing what it took to actually sit for the exam, or that there were two of them.

In the 8 calendar days since then, including a weekend, you applied for your license, received your Examination Approval Notice from the State, scheduled both exams, took both exams, and received your scores?

Wow, Louisiana sure sounds like an amazing state to get licensing in then, if you can apply, enroll, and pass a test without any preparation, and start working as a licensed member, all in the same week!
