Hello
i was wondering how can we quantify segregation of concrete ? and to what extent can we say that the element should be destroyed and remade again ?
I know that for the latter , it depends on the element studied and its function and the importance of the structure . But i would appreciate any guides or rules
Thanks

The results are quantified by concrete testing. That is one of the reasons that concrete samples are taken during concrete placement.

bimr: I think he is talking about segregation in the process of placing, screeding, vibrating, finishing, etc.

Unfortunately, segregation is a result of placement technique and not something you can test for. You have to control the placement techniques in order to effectively minimize the potential for segregation.

Ok so is it fine to say , oh we got a segregation here we need to destroy the element !
or can we say , this is not that bad and we should perhaps use a financial penalty against the contractor

It depends on the severity of the segregation, where it occurs and how critical the member is to the structure. All have to be considered.

I agree with Ron. Also, a well written spec will address defects and how they are to be repaired.

You can take cores and visually examine them. The cores can be tested. Check with ICRI, International Concrete Repair Institute.
