COMPRESS build 6310 provides a new printing control to ensure better reliability with new report features. Most of these changes are "behind the scenes" and will be transparent to the user; there are minimal changes to the interface. However, some common questions follow.
What happened with build 6310 and the print control?
REPLY: COMPRESS build 6310 introduces a streamlined printing functionality. The changes are not fully apparent unless users check the "use legacy print controls" option and review the options available with the Options button. The new method is essentially what is available in the legacy controls by selecting option to "spool all components into one print job".
The controls provided in the "Troubleshooting" frame (legacy) had been provided in the past at a time when many users experienced problems with printers with insufficient memory for printing large COMPRESS reports. Newer printers are not generally subject to these problems. Retaining these controls has resulted in problems for some users with new COMPRESS reports that provide additional functionality (such as the new Division 2 reports with summary tables that can be "clicked" to close for more convenient browsing of the report). Consequently the printing function has been streamlined for use with the new reports.
The default settings for printing now includes a Print Preview button but when I click on it all I get are blank pages.
REPLY: It is likely that you are previewing a large report; it may take 30 seconds or more for a large report to spool up. Test with a very short report, such as for a cylinder only in the Print List; it should be very fast. Large reports will take longer. Remember that these reports may run to many hundreds of pages and will place some demand on your system.
The other problem is that the default setting put page numbers on the pages but there are no page numbers on the table on contents.
REPLY: The previous default print method sent the component reports to the printer as individual print jobs. The numbers on the Table of Contents referred to the section number that the component was assigned (ie: the order in which the components are listed in the Print List). The section number was optionally printed on each page. When the "spool all components into one print job" option is selected the Table of Contents provides the same section numbering, related to the order in the Print List, but no section numbers are printed on the individual pages; instead the pages are numbered sequentially from 1 through total number of pages. The new method uses the same principle, with the report section numbers from the Print List and sequential page numbering.
Unfortunately, at this time there is no function available to provide the actual page number at which each component's report begins. We have had numerous requests for this feature in the past but the solution has proved to be elusive from a technical standpoint. But now that this is the default method I will ask our programmers to revisit this problem again to see if there isn't some method available to obtain to the page numbers.
Is there a way I can make the Legacy Settings the default?
REPLY: No. As discussed above the need is to make the printing system more reliable for current report features (using advanced html, java script, etc) and to drop controls that conflict with these new features. Newer printers are not subject to the hardware limitations of years ago so there is no need to retain these controls. However, if there are additional features desired for the new printing system users should send send their request to Codeware.
