Column Capital / Dropped panel reinforcing

Does anyone know reinforcing requirements for column capitals or dropped panels? I am assuming that the minimum reinforcing for columns would also apply here. Thanks in advance for any help. Robert

If you mean in the bottom of dropped panels, they are usually unreinforced unless there is stress reversal due to earthquake. In that case, same as any flexural member.

Column capitals are also generally unreinforced. They are compression only elements to provide greater punching shear perimeter.

i think it is good practice to at least add minimum reinforcing to the bottom of drop panels or capitals... but it is not required by code... nor for strength


don't forget though, you need to provided bottom integrity reinforcement so if you don't have bottom bars over your column, that is a good place to put them
