I am looking for guidance on an enclosure used to house electronic equipment. The enclosure is a rectangular flanged box with o-ring seals and flat lid. The enclosure will be used to keep the equipment dry while submerged in water to a depth of 60-70 feet. When would this become an unfired pressure vessel and require ASME construction.

tom1982, I doubt such a vessel would ever be considered subject to any pressure vessel code, unless it were imposed by the owner.

Code methods could be used in design if one wished, although there might be better ways.

ASME Sec VIII, Div 1 exempts vessels whose longest cross section inside length dimension (diameter, side, diagonal, etc) is under 6 inch, no limit on vessel length.

My 'read' is that this use is outside of the B&PV intent of ASME, thus 'non-Code'.
*However*, I would use the design rules of ASME Sect VIII Div-1. They are fairly 'readable' and easy to work to.

Thanks for the replies, I do need to close the loop on this though. This tool will be used in a nuclear plant in the reactor vessel the borated water will be contaminated.
