Clearance to tighten bolt at concrete wall 1

Does anyone have a rule of thumb for clearance required between a wall and beam flange tip for a worker to reach down and put a spud wrench on the back of a bolt?

I'm thinking 6 inches minimum.

Why don't they put the bolt in from the back side and use a wrench on the side without a wall next to it? Unless you call it out and it is AESS, they likely will do it whichever way is easiest for them.

edit: Just realized you were talking about getting a wrench on the back side to hold it while they tighten it. Not my brightest moment, please ignore me.

6” will work although the ironworker might have to hold them from above and below the beam. If it’s not a slip critical connection they won’t curse you as much.

If the bolts are (or can be) fully tensioned, you should consider tension control (AKA twist-off) bolts, then there is no need to get a wrench on the back side. Just need enough space to get the bolts through the holes.
