I have a project where I would like to add-in some sway bracing between two large trusses. The trusses were built in 1923. Right now, the bottom chords of the trusses are prohibiited from moving laterally by a plaster ceiling. The architect plans to remove the plaster ceiling in a renovation.
Due to some other steel issues, I have had the steel tested for weldability and strength. Although those results are good, I am reluctant to weld to the existing steel (due to the period in which it was fabricated). I am also reluctant to drill and bolt sway bracing, as the steel is near its allowable stresses as is.
Is there an approved method of clamping new steel to existing steel?....that would allow me to add plates, angles, etc for sway bracing without having to weld or drill the existing steel?
