Hi dear,
Could someone explain to me how the nature of the phase is chosen (100% liquid, 100% vapor, mixed phase) for feeding a distillation column.

Graphically, the selection of the phase(s) of the feed is the determination of the "Q" line. This affects your separation and tower design significantly. To graphically understand this, use the McCabe Thiele method and consider different q-lines with the given operating lines and consider how the stripping and rectifying sections, as well as total number of stages, would be affected by changing the q-line.
