I just watched a one-hour Nova (PBS) program titled "Secrets of the Forbidden City". I found a 3-minute video synopsis that includes all the good bits that a structural engineer will enjoy, including earthquake testing of a sub-scale structure.

It would be neat to have details of all the timber framed joints used. The ductility and internal damping is just incredible.

A lot of room for motion, but restrained by many small friction surfaces. Friction resistance absorbs much more energy than elastic resistance.

I forgot a very important part. Friction between surfaces is difficult to predict reliably. By using many friction surfaces, they effectively reduce the friction variables statistically.

'yup

One of the best practice in the structure lesson.
