This might sound a bit strange. I have a customer spec. that calls for an outer centering ring on GMGC gasket.
From my experience in heat exchanger design, I havent come across a situation where a GMGC gasket has a centering ring.
I know ofcourse that this is a requirement for a spiral wound gasket.

Is there anyone who can suggest the purpose of providing a centering ring given thatall the flanges are male-female type. Also if it is at all required is there any catalog that talks about the possibe width of centering ring for a 37" OD X half inch wide gasket.

Thankyou for your help

TEMA R clase is the ONLY class that requires the use of confined gaskets.
TEMA C and B allow unconfined gaskets, in this case a centering ring makes sense, in fact is needed...

In the case of confined gaskets there is danger that the ring will have metal to metal contact with the flanges... i.e. leaks.

compare R-6.5 with C-6.5, B-6.5
