Cast iron 1

I have cast iron with 3.8%C and 14% Cr. I need to heat treat it. 1] Anneal it, and the harded it.

What are the hardening temperatures recommended for this alloy? I know because of the high Cr content, I will have to increase the austenizing temp to get Cr in to solution. Is 1750F a good temp to get most of the Cr in to solution?

In cast condition, they have a hardness of Rc 42-46. I have to soften them for ease of machining. What is the best annealing process for this alloy.

The auatenitizing temperature will be 980-1000C with long hours of soaking and slow furnace cooling. What kind of machining operations are involved. For hardening you repeat the same heating cycle and then cool in fast air. Your carbon appears to be on the very high side. Be carful during blast cooling.

arunmrao is probably the most knowledgeable person on Eng-Tips with regards to this subject. ASM HANDBOOK Volume 4 provides a range of 950-1010 C for austenitizing white irons with 12-18% Cr.
