I'm looking to have a cast iron tread attach to a C12 stringer for an exterior stair. How would I go about attaching this to the steel? I could use end angles, but I can't weld the two metals, what type of bolts do I use for the attachment?
Thanks.

Cory,
I could use that to attach the angle to the stringer, but not the tread. I'm looking for an underside mounted screw or a low profile bolt that could be installed from the top of the tread but would not cause a tripping hazard.

Thanks for your help.

Have you try to look into grating manuf's literatures for clamps. It might work for your case, if you insist on using edge seat angles. Otherwise, like Cory suggested, connect the thread directly to the stringers through bolting, it's not unusual if the thread end bar is capable of taking such load.

Most of the cast iron treads I've seen use countersunk bolts (stove bolts may be what they are called).

I wouldn't suggest a high strength bolt that might be fully tightened and then crack the tread. Regular machine bolts with a counter sunk head should work nicely.

For those of us who are unaware of cast iron stair treads, could you post a picture or a link to a description? It seems a little odd to have a product that doesn't have a mounting method already worked out.

A lot CI treads have mounting holes in them as received. Having pre drilled holes dictates the location of the supports so a lot of people opt out for the undrilled version of the treads.
