Yes, I jumped from a C-47 when I was a young Marine training to be a parachute rigger at Lakehurst New Jersy sometime in 73-74.
Our jumps were not static line (even the first time), we went out in a tuck position. Considering how things are today in the world of sport parachuting, it was a very unique experience.
We were learning to pack chutes for ejection seats. Part of the training was to pack and jump our own chute one time.
One worry the instructors talked about was folks opening the chute before they got out the door of the airplane. If your chute hooked on something in the airplane they could let it loose. But if it somehow hung up on the horizontal stab and it was dragging you along, there might not be any way to land the plane without doing you in.
In our case, we had the quick release fittings taped closed so they couldn't be released. Apparently some knucklehead fiddled with his and released the canopy at 300 feet. So the policy was to tape ours with black electircal tape.
There was also story of a cheif that went out and did a double salute, but was caught by some freak updraft and killed when his head hit the horizontal stab.
So mauch for old stories. Thanks for asking the question.
