I am looking for an option to extend the life of a machine component (Chip Track Rod). The machines are currently using 1018 rod, which is wearing out very quickly. I am thinking about carburizing the rods to increase the surface hardness to guard against untimely wear, however these rods are held in tension and I am concerned about brittleness after carburization. Can anyone speak to the performance of material in this situation?

Better to post this question in the Metal and Metallurgy Engineering area. The Gentle Hobbits that inhabit that realm are truly a bunch of alchemistic wizards.
