Does anyone have a good source for design information for a capstan as used in a winch application (I'm not designing a tape recorder which seems to be the most documented use of a capstan!)
The system in question would have a specific line pull on the haul line, which is then wrapped some specified number of turns around a capstan and then to a winch drum which takes up the slack under a reduced tension (due to the capstan).
I'm looking to determine the line pull on both sides of the capstan (based on the number of wraps), and the horsepower requirement of the capstan.
Thanks

I did a search on Google.com for "marine capstan mechanical design" and got 369 site hits... not sure how much of that was relavent though. "Happy the Hare at morning for she is ignorant to the Hunter's waking thoughts."

It's not exactly your problem, but you can find some pretty useful information in "Design of Weldments" by Omer Blodgett, published by Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation, The books from Lincoln are incredibly cheap.

Look in Mark's Handbook under pulleys for frictional resistance to get your two tensions, take the moments and get a net torque, then use standard horsepower equation with your particular rpm.
