A contractor asked if it was acceptable to use 12/2 MC Cable for the light fixtures/drops from the junction box in the ceiling. I looked at spec sheets for this cable from a few different manufacturers and could not find a reason why it could not be used. If you are familiar with this type of cable, please let me know if you think it is acceptable for this purpose. Thank you.

Shouldn't be a problem. As a matter of fact, it is pretty typical to use MC for fixture whips from j-boxes.

If the drop ceiling space is used as a return air plenum, your fire code will probably require "Interlocking metal armor" on most cables, so it may even be a code requirement. In some jurisdictions this applies to telephone and data lines as well as power wiring. It has to do with the fumes generated by the plastic coverings in the event of a fire or exreme heat, rather than the use to which the cables are put.
