We have a job coming up consisting of welding hastelloy C276 material. Mostly this will be welding support beams 3/4" material to 1" material welded with fillets. In another part of the job we will have to weld a 2" thick support ring to a 1/4" plate using a 1/4" fillet weld. All of this will be done in the flat position using GTAW and GMAW processes. Can you tell me what the plate size requirement is for this PQR? Also, for the welder qualification, is it necessary to use C-276 as the base material? I believe it is for the PQR, but not sure about the welder's test.

Thanks,
Blake

Per ASME IX carbon steel may be used as the base plates for welder qualification.

For plate sizing check out Table QW-451.4 and Table QW-451.1. See also QW-202.2(c)...and finally the figures in QW-163.

The size requirements for test plates in ASME Section IX do not vary depending on the material type. Use the same size as you would for other materials.
