Bridge "End Dam" Repair

I'm working on a roadway mill/resurface project that has a bridge within the project limits. The client is requesting that we replace the bridge end dams due to settlement.

The problem is that the bridge has two twelve foot lanes with two (2) foot outside shoulders. The traffic on the roadway is approximately 40% trucks. The client believes that the repair can be made in one work period while controlling traffic with flaggers.

I'm concerned about the feasibility of pouring the replacement end dam and opening to traffic. Does not seem feasible to me. Any ideas?

?How deep are you going to have to excavate for repairs? If too deep the "drop-off" will get you.

You can use steel plates with cold patch ramps to span over the end dams as required for demolition and rebuild.
 
Please define end dam. Do you mean approach slab?

The end dam is the end of the approach slab. The cut will be approximately 6-8" deep and 9" long across the entire roadway. The "drop-off" doesn't concern me IF it can be done in one active period. IF it can't, that is the problem. I don't have room to install a barrier to protect the drop-off / open cut roadway.

I've been thinking about the use of steel plates, but how do you secure the plate to the bridge deck to keep it from sliding out of place under the forces of a semi?

A new issue has also developed concerning the steel the client wants in the repair area. My thought so far was that IF the work can be done in one work period, we could phase the work to do half of the roadway with two-way one-lane traffic on the other lane. The catch is getting an appropriate splice with the tranverse steel in the repair area while only working half of the roadway at a time.
