Bolted Shear Connection Erection Question in Column Web

Folks,

I have seen a couple of pictures and details showing a wide flange beam framing into the web of a column in which the beam fits into the column web and the connection is all bolted. I can see getting a socket in to properly tighten the column bolts, but how do the bolts on the beam get tightened if they are within the column flanges?

If the beam bolts are shop attached and the column bolts are field attached then how do you account for horizontal adjustment? Is this type of connection typical?

Depends on the geometry. If the column is large enough, or if the bolts are through the column web, no problem. If it is a tiny column and the bolts are through the beam web, it is poor detailing.

What horizontal adjustment?

Clip angles are typically shop bolted to tbe beam web and field bolted to the column web. Consideration is required of the column hole gage for erection tolerance. The outstanding legs of the connection angles typically use horizontal short slots. This provide erection tolerance and simplifies the requirements for gage of angle. Horizontal adjustment is not a consideration, unless required for specific issues.
