hi,
i have joined boiler industry a few months ago,
i ma using a software for thermal design,
but i need to learnd fundmentals of thermal calculation, can any body send me manual calculation for efficiency, furnace sizing, superheaters performance, economizer design, auxillary selection,
or any descriptive book is there
helpo will be appriciated

Hi Jeepee,
The fundamentals of thermal calculations are described in detail for direct fired process heaters at and for HRSG and Waste Heat Boiler design at Currently being worked on is Thermal Fluid Heaters and Steam Hydrocarbon Reformers. Future sites for Fired Boilers is in planning. Any contributions of articles, methods formulas, etc, to these free educational sites is appreciated.

Jeepee,

Thermal design is an iterative process whereby variables are manipulated in order to achieve the required process conditions. A starting point is always to determine the heat load for the exchanger, using the basic thermodynamic equation Q = m.Cp.(delta T). A heat balance must be achieved. TEMA has guidelines for the maximum permissable deviation (I speak under correc but I think it is 2%). There are many things to consider when doing thermal design eg. Pressure drops, Effect of fouling, acoustic and vibration predictions etc. TEMA is the best resource I can think of for you to understand the fundamentals of thermodynamic design. Other books are of course available, but I would not place any thermal guarantees on your designs unless they have been check by some thermal design program. (HTRI, Aspen B-Jac etc.)

For calculations relating to boiler efficiency you should refer to an appropriate test code such as ASME PTC4.1. This is because such calculations should always reflect the manner in which the boiler will be tested to show compliance with the guaranteed efficiency. With regard to the other calculations, see Babcock and Wilcox "Steam" book or Combustion Engineering's equivalent. If I were you I would only rely on boiler suppliers methods of calculation.

I will KNOW ABOUT TYPE OF SUPERHEATER IN FIRETUBE STEAM BOILER AND ABOUT THERMAL DESIGN OF THESE SUPERHEATER
