Bar grating has and can be used as a diaphram. It was a standard building practice/requirement in Chile in the 1980's and 1990's. Highrise steel buildings were required to have each floor of the steel structure covered with steel bar grating with the grating welded to the structure at each point of intersection.

Look at pictures of the recent large earthquake in Chile. Large steel buildings that toppled, toppled as rectangular (virtually)intact cubes.

If the grating is too flexible, you could add diagonal flat bars or angles welded to the underside of the grating.

While I disagree with the statement made, is there a question here?

Does anyone weld their grating these days? If grating had that capability, the manufactures would tout it, but they don't.

Michael.
Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

The original thread that is referenced is "closed", so the comment couldn't be added to that thread, thus this one.

Note the original thread asked about galvanized grating bolted with clips, which is a bit different situation.
