Can someone clarify on how the imposed load should apply to the balustrade based on BS6399. As far as I know the balustrade/handrail should resist the vertical and horizontal load but the question is does the vertical and horizontal should act simultaneously on the design? Because when I consider it on the same time the sections i get from the analysis is so much bigger compare to the handrail i see on malls specially when its a wall mounted handrail.

Not familiar with the British Standard, but the intent of the section is clear. "In combination with the recommended horizontal loading..." does not leave room for interpretation.

Whatever the code or the location, it is common to see handrail sections which don't seem to comply.

Thank you hookie66 because in american code its either vertical or horizontal load and it doesnt need to act simultaneously. Im hoping that british code just have some typo or something.

Pay attention : BS 6399:1996 has been superseded and withdrawn. It is replaced by : BS EN 1991-1-1 : 2002 and BS EN 1991 -1-7 + BS A1:2014 (so called Eurocodes + National Annex A1)
