Does anyone know if it is possible to insert a background image into a sketch? I would like to develop curves for product based on an industrial design sketch. If not, would the best way may be to do this be through a drawing background image? Thanks.

I have no idea if you can do this. If you can't though, I can tell you to use any graphical software (Photoshop or PaintShop Pro would do it) to insert your sketch on your background.

FrenchCAD

Thanks FrenchCAD,
I know it can also be done in Rhino3d - export iges and read into Catia.

try inserting it into a drawing, then make your curves in the drawing. You then can copy and paste the curves into your 3d file.

Thanks rickyt
Good suggestion. It would have been nice to be able to do it wihin a sketch plane, so that we didn't have to keep switching modules.

Ideally, I would like to have three perpendicular sketch planes for side, end and plan view pictures from our industrial designer. From these, I could easily construct representative wireframe and surfaces / solids and then communicate with industrial design any mechanical issues. I hope they add this feature in future.
Thanks again.

Hi!

There is a module called "Freestyle Sketch Tracer" under Shape Design & Styling. Check the online documentation or Dassault`s web pages if this is what your after.

Thanks raufoss

Sounds like this is what we need. I'll have to convince our purchasing team to spend a liitle money here for this module.

Hello
I would like to add that if you are working with files that have alot of fillets, rounds, blends, and draft you are going to find that this tool works less than when it does by a great number like 1 out of 75.
