Hello All: I came from a Mil-278 background and my new job is asking about getting compliant with section IX for CRN Registration purposes. A few questions. As I read the code it does not appear to address joint design, base metals, inspections or welder training?? Are the requirements of B31.1 and B31.3 incorporated under Section IX. Do they allow Autogenous welds?? Mil-278 did not. Our alloys are 304 tube to 430 FR bar with no specifications assigned to them, yet. Is that OK ?

Capntom;
That is correct; Section IX is like a road map that provides basic requirements needed to qualify welding/brazing procedures, and qualification of welders/brazers (and operators too). Other ASME Codes and Standards simply refer the user to Section IX for minimum requirements related to the above, not training, or joint design, or filler metal selection, etc. Joint design, training requirements, filler metal selection may be listed in the applicable code or standard, it depends on application.

My advice to you is to investigate attending either an ASME B&PV Code, Section IX class or one of the welding code classes offered by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors. These classes provide an excellent overview of Section IX and application.

Consider "Practical Welding Technology" offered by ASME. You can look up the particulars on the ASME website (asme.org).

ASME Section IX and the companion construction codes such as Section I, Section VIII, B31.1, or B31.3 will not provide any direction on the proper selection base metals and matching filler metals.

AWS welding codes and standards do a good job of matching base metals and filler metals, but you are still required to test a welded coupon in accordance with ASME Section IX to verify the mechanical properties meet the minimum code requirements.

Best regards - Al

Mil Std 278 was a fabrication standard if I remember correctly and there was a seperate standard for procedure and performance qualification. (Mil std 248). ASME Sec IX addresses only qualification requirements. The applicable code of construction/fabrication would refer to Sec IX for qualifcation of welders and procedures.

There are NO training requirements for welders other than in the case of failing a weld test.
