Our company has an equipment supplier based in Germany whose designs and processes conform to EN 729. Our equipment must comply with the requirements of AWS D1.1. Can anyone let me know if there are substantial differences between these two standards? I am looking for a quick and easily accessed reference if possible.

I will take a stab at this based on my QA background. In essence, EN 729 deals more with certification of an organization's program related to aspects of competency and control - for example use of 3rd party oversight for welding. Part of EN 729 titled "Quality Requirements for Welding" deals specifically with process requirements and control for welding performed by a manufacturer. It has nothing to do with a specific construction Code like AWS D1.1 or even ASME B&PV Code. So there is no actual comparison of Standards.

I believe the EN 729 is similar to the Directive for Pressure Vessels or the Directive for Machinery. I found this web site that might be of help to you and has information on the welding process/control aspects of EN 729 issued by the European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting.
