ASTM-A581 vs ASTM-A582

Customer calls out 303 per ASTM-A581 with a note recommendation of 5/16 material, my material supplier says thats for wirer only and sends me 303 ASTM-A582. Neither spec definds size except to refer to "wirer" and "bar". can anyone lead me to an acceptable reference to satisfy this issue?

It doesn't depend on size, it depends on starting material.
A581 conforms with A555 and starts as rod, it is coiled product.
A582 must comply with A484 and must start as bar, billet, or forging.

The finished items may look identical.

If there is a drawing that specifies Type 303 according to ASTM A581, then this is likely indicating that the part is to be manufactured using a cold heading/forming process. Cold heading uses wire (coiled rod is cold drawn through a die, final product is in coil form) as the starting material. Most 303 is in bar form (straight lengths), which is the normal input for screw machining (multiple spindle lathes, bar machines, etc.) and turning (CNC lathes, turning centers, etc.).
