I want to put some pockets in an assembly (a 2 piece weldment).
Sounds easy enough right?
Heres my catch, I need to have radiused edges on the bottom of the pocket - as if it were cut by a radiused endmill. I need this so I can accurately represent the goemetry when I run this model through cosmosworks.
Working this feature into the assembly model appears to be pretty hopeless (correct me if I am wrong), so I am considering saving the assembly as a part and then adding these features in the part file.

My question: Is there a way to save an assembly as a part, but have the part be updated if the assembly geometry is changed??

You may be able to generate the geometry with a cut sweep. If the goal is "just" to have a model that is good for analysis, then saving the assy as a part is okay. But you will lose the parametric updates.

Overall I would recommend modelling the weldment as a multibody part. In that environment, you have all the functionality of the part to generate the geometry and you can do the analysis as well. If you absolutely need to detail the bodies separately, you can save bodies as separate files. Links between the new parts ARE maintained. So if you update the original multibody part, your two other parts will update.

Thanks for the suggestions. I dont think a swept cut is an option within an assembly, and that would get UGLY on this part (lots of triangular truss-like pockets).

The multibody part idea saved my day. The reason that I'd like to save each body as a seperate file was for detailing the blanks to be cut prior to weld.

You do not neet to save each body for detailing. You can detail each body using Relative View.

if it is suitable, one option is..

If you want to machine assembly and the assembly feature's power doesnt enough for your operations, you can make "machined" configurations for each part.Then your assembly will have 2 configurations. One of name is "unmachined" the other name is "machined". Bind your machined part configurations to your machined assembly configuration.
