Asphalt Pavement Strains

Hi Guys...

Got a question. Can anybody tell me the relation between deflection and strain in asphalt pavements. Is there a known, researched relation / equation that can be used to calculate strain at a particular point if the vertical deflection at that point is known?

There is a good treatment of this subject in "Principles of Pavement Design" by Yoder and Witczak. If you use elastic layer analysis principles, you can compute the strains in the asphalt layer (or any other layer with known thickness, resilient modulus, and Poisson's ratio).

An easy way to compute these strains is to use one of the many computer programs available. One is in the public domain, ELSYM5 (a DOS-based elastic layer analysis program).

Check out Poulos and Davis "Elastic Solutions to . . ." - can't remember the exact title. They have elastic solutions to just about everything!
