ASME IX Welder Qualification Thicknesses?

I intend to test welders on 1" plate and use the radiographic substitution in place of bend tests (QW 142)

My question is what table do I use to calculate the thickness qualified?
QW 4521-1 gives me "Maximum to be welded" and QW 452-2 gives me "2t"
I'm sure this has been questioned before, have I missed something?

The qualified thickness is 2t, but, if you use test coupons 1/2" thick, or thicker, and, deposit a minimum of three layers, qualified thickness is only limited by the WPS.

Read QW-404.30 and this will give you the answer to your question of where to look.
 
Is a weld "layer" the same as a weld "pass"?

There is no need to use the 1" plate. You may have realized that but I thought I would mention it. (unless you are using two processes).

There is no Base metal thickness range for performance.

JoeTank: I typically hear "pass" as implying singularity, i.e. a single stringer or weave, whereas a layer is comprised of all the passes needed to cover any preexisting passes.

No I didn’t realise this, can you point me in the direction of the Code to qualify this?

I’m finding the Da-Vinci code easier to decipher than ASME IX !
 
If you look in the applicable charts under QW-350 you will notice that no mention is made of base metal thickness.

QW-452 only refers to thickness of weld metal qualfified.

If you have a 2" thick joint and 4 welders qualfied for 1/2" of deposit thickness AND a WPS qualified for that thickness, then you can weld up the joint with multiple welders.
