Hi all,

Is there any reference in the B31.3 regarding the code to follow for the structural steel for the pipe supports or are we free to use anything we like? I saw a reference to AISC Manual but not for structural steel. For wind and seismic ASCE7 has to be followed. The information I can remember is that structural steel is not covered by B31.3 as per 300.2.

What's the common practice?

Regards

Pipe hangers, supports, pipe bridges, etc. are typically designed, fabricated, and erected per the AISC Steel Construction Manual. The reference to AISC is in the code, you just need to fish around a little.

Best regards - Al

B31.3 is only interested in anything attached to the piping.
Your contract documents should note what to use for structural.
Many projects I have been on used AWS D1.1 but it really depends where you are located.
If nothing noted in contract documents use your country / regions structural code and you should be safe from any bites on the ass at a later stage.
