Hello,

I am new to the forum. I am an AWS CWI working in a technical department for a welding supply company in the US. One of my duties is Shop surveillance covering the auditing of WPS’s, Welder Quals and Code compliance.
When I first entered this particular vessel shop I noticed some issues with insufficient penetration on some small bore nozzles welded directly to the vessel shell. They are weldolets/threadolets.
These vessels fall under Sec. VIII Div 1.

My question is.
Where in Section VIII do I find the requirements for these?
NPS 3” and down weldolets
Shell thickness 1 ½-2 ½ thick
I have been reading in UW-16. It appears that these fall into the Cat D weld classification and would require complete joint penetration and they can only be welded from one side.
I would like to be able to narrow this down to line and paragraph so that I may present this to the customer QA manager.

Thanks
Jeb.

jebthereb, read UW-16 carefully and fully. Under some conditions small connections may be fillet welded from one side only. See UW-16(d),(e).

Mike

And if these items are O'lets, they are indeed required to be Full-Penn, not 'set on' with a fillet.

I did. I am always amazed at what I miss.

(d)(e) dont apply-these are not set through. they are set on.

16 (f) addresses these fittings. With some exceptions (2)(3)(4)(5)(6) which does not apply here these fittings shall be welded by full penetration welds.

I just wanted to make sure I have the right line and paragraph and any other places that may address this.

Yes they are.
