Hi,

Recently i have noticed that the ASME VIII Div.1 vessels we manufacture use AS3678 plate for non pressure parts (in lieu of SA-36). We also use AS1548 but of course this an accepted material in II Part D.

I cant find any reference to AS3678 in part II D , but was wondering if there is a paragraph somewhere in div 1 that allows the use of this material for structural supports / trays etc.

I seem to recall a paragraph somewhere talking about other steels may be substituted as long as they are of weldable quality and met certain composition requirement.

Regards,
Richard

The ASME BPVC is an American code and as such is listing primarily the American materials for use with its code. Some allowances have been made in time for inclusion of some foreign materials frequently used. That is the AS1548 type of boiler plate material listed in ASME II Table D. Same goes for other materials listed in Table D, of other than US manufacture.
AS 1210 allows the use of AS 3678 structural plate for pressure vessels under some conditions (refer Table B1), but that is not part of the ASME covered topic.
Nevertheless, the AS 3678 plate may be used in ASME VIII design as equivalent of SA 36, provided it complies with all the limitations of AS 1210 and the allowable stress is in accordance with AS 1210 requirements. It might be covered under UG-4(d). Perhaps in your particular case, as a non-pressure containing component it comes under the UG-4(b).

Thanks gr2vessels,

in regard to one thing you said , where is this referenced in ASME BPVC?
