I've got a file sent to me that was a pretty large assembly, that was saved down to a step file. I have hundreds of part copies in the file. Is there a way to simplify all those pieces... maybe into a body feature? Or just any way that will make it easier to work with even if the individual pieces are no longer editable?

For simple geometry you can try opening it as a part instead of an assembly.

However, this will only work for simple geometry or you get issues and it won't translate.

Posting guidelines faq731-376 (probably not aimed specifically at you)
What is Engineering anyway: faq1088-1484

I've done that already, but once I open the "part" it shows as a bunch of part copies. I'm asking is there a way to combine all those at this point?

When you say "part copies" do you mean design or construction bodies? If so you can open a new part and insert this part as a part copy and it should have only one body.
