Anti-icing protection of gas turbine air inlet

Dear all,

we are planning to install a mid-power gas turbine for a so-called cycling daily "start and stop" operation. The power plant will be located in a south-european region, in a rather mild and hot climate, close to the mediterranean sea shores.

The air inlet duct of this GT will be equiped with static filters, in a 3 stages arrangement : coalescing filters + prefilters + filters.

The gas turbine engine is protected from anti-icing by hot air injection bleeded from the compressor (bleed heating). However, this hot air is injected downstream of the filters.

Our concern is that there is no additional anti-icing device to prevent ice formation on the filter panels themselves (in other words : no additional heat exchanger or heating device upstream of the filters).

According to temperature archives recorded on-site, there are very few hours with freezing conditions per year, and approximately 500 hours per year with temperature comprised between 0°C and 5°C, in winter.

Does this configuration put our project at risk ?
If you have already experienced ice formation on static filters, how did this arise and what have been the consequences ?

Thank you for your help.

Best wishes to all of you.

Yes with high humidity (>80%).
You may have blocks of ice hanging from the filter boxes.

saludos.
