We are designing a bridge and the client has requested that all vertical concrete surfaces be coated to prevent graffiti. We have not specified this before, but from looking on the internet, I see there are sacrificial and permanent coatings available.

Anyone have any experience with either? Recommendations on which type is better?

Thanks

One solution is,that you contact a few supliers of anti graffiti coating. Than you have 'll have a clear what is usefull for your applience. and what is on the market.

I was marginally involved on the selection of an antigraffiti coating on a previous job, in fact some elements were 'marked' before constructio finished. We could not find anything really effective. All treatments were really temporary and involved regular re-application and strong power washing and scrubbing to remove the graffiti anyway.

Finaly we opted for not doing anything and paint over the graffiti with a concrete colour paint immediately after it would be discovered. Apparently the artist loose interest if after spending a considerable amount of time the 'art' is covered next morning without anybody seeing it.

I would be interested if you find anything effective though. I could use it on future jobs

Ever hear about how the media boosted the proliferation of grafitti in NYC?

A TV newscaster once highlighted grafitti, and the grafitti kids responded in droves hoping to be featured on TV.

I would like to hear about how NYC finally brought this to a screeching halt. Jail time and bills to the parents probably helped.

Here's TxDOT's list of approved anti-graffiti coatings:

They've been pleased with the "permanent, water-cleanable" type at the bottom. Those are the ones where the graffiti paint doesn't really adhere. (Disregard the highlighting; that just shows a change from the previous version.)
