Hi,

I am trying to insert a crack in a model using the macro CTMOPT in Ansys 13.
It is a surface crack, full crack. I get an error claiming 'Please check the workplane orientation and crack dimensions'

Anyone has solutions/tutorial for proper use of this macro?

Thanks!

is there a worked example for using this in the manual ?

have you tried the ANSYS helpdesk ??

Yeah there is an example, but that's for a simple plain surface. Doesn't really help. Want to know if anyone's worked with more complex geometries or has a proper tutorial?

Thanks rb1957,btw!

simple plane surface or not, using the macro should be the same. have you tried to copy the example ?

why do you think your geometry is complex ? does the macro work for (is appliciable to) your elements ??

Hey rb1957,

Yeah, I've tried copying the example for a continous/smooth volume. My doubt is if the Macro is applicable for volumes with discontinuities/not smooth, which isn't explained. ALso, I'd like a heads up on the different parameters as well, which aren't clearly explained. A better example or explanation of its features would help.

Thanks!

sounds like you need to talk to the helpdesk

This is the example given, FYI. I'd like to insert a crack at the intersection of two volumes, like a step. Not able to.
A crude example would be, I would like to insert a crack at the intersection of the boss/riser and the smooth surface. Any idea?

if you are changing parameters etc, how do you know the results are good ? you'll need to run a standard (simple) crack geometry with a known answer.

Precisely. I have validated results for a standard, simple crack, by comparing with other packages to get SIFs. So the methodology seems fine. But when I move onto complicated geometries, problems creep in. More than complicated, something like the intersection I spoke about in the previous post. The macro doesn't seem to function!

Also, could you run me through 'talking to the helpdesk'? Never really done it before.

Thanks

if you have a license, you should have a number to call.

if you have a license, but no number, i'd go to their website and look for someone to call.

if you don't have a license, you're on your own !

Second option :P
Will look for numbers. Thanks!
