Anchorage to side of hollow core plank

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to attach a ledger to the side of a hollow core plank. Hilti Technical Guide only shows what to use on the bottom (or top) (min. 1-3/8" thick). No information about the sides of the plank. Should I consider this situation same as anchoring to hollow concrete block (CMU)?

A ledger for what? Perhaps there is a better way. The edge of the panel may be full thickness,may be almost none. They may have cut it directly adjacent to a core. You may have to make up a 6" gap.

I typically wouldn't be doing this except for the lightest of loading.

Do you have a photo or diagram? Maybe there is a grout filled cell in the hollow core plank?

Please see attached. The picture is not of a high resolution, but you can see there the edge of the plank and anchors. We assumed minimum 1.5" embedment. Please advise. Thank you

If you plan to specify Hilti anchors, contact Hilti. I prefer contacting the local engineering instead of contacting the US headquarters in TX

Are these the screens like you would use for hollow block or is this just a little epoxy squirted into a hole? 1.5" might be pretty optimistic - I hope your loads are really light. No matter what the load, Hilti probably wants something like a minimum of 3" base material thickness for even the most shallow of embedments.

Once the plus side, the concrete strength is probably pretty high.

The building is from 70', we assumed 4000 psi concrete. The structure is wood, as I said before, it is designed to support sheds for beach stuff (20psf LL). We used Hilti HIT 270. The thickness before we hit the core turned out to be around 2.5". I was just wondering if anyone ever used something else to attach to the side of a concrete plank?

It doesn't seem like you are going to really do what we suggest anyways. More like you're looking for the blessing of a bunch of strangers that what you are doing is acceptable.

Why not have a local engineer hired to do the design and detailing as opposed to just building what you want?

Even at 2 1/2" of embedment, that may or may not be enough. Depends how far the shed joists span amongst other things.

When in doubt, contact a local Hilti rep and see if they will do a load test. The reps I have dealt with always make a point to mention that field testing is an option and that they are willing and able to do the tests.
