Ammonia Liquor in Coke Oven Plant

Hi,

Can anybody let me know if A36 Carbon steel is a good material for storage tank for storing Ammonia Liquor. At present I do not have any information on concentration, temperature, MSDS, etc. Is there any reference that will list concentrations of Ammonia Liquor vs. corrosion resistance of carbon steels?

Carbon steel is a good material for storing ammonia liquor (ammonium hydroxide, or aqueous ammonia) from an ammonia standpoint. My favorite reference book, Handbook of Corrosion Data (2nd Edition) does not list carbons steels in this environment. From a corrosion standpoint you should be more concerned with the aqueous water environment, especially from areas seeing wetting-drying cycles as the level in the tank goes up and down. You should note that carbon steels can be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking under contact with ammonia, but that should not be a factor here since SCC in inhibited with the addition of at least 0.1% water.

All our CAL equipment was CS. Many years old (pre1950). Still in operation when the plant closed in 1990 with no identified corrosion problems.

I would strongly recommend you use ASTM A 516 carbon steel pressure vessel material versus ASTM A 36. A 36 is a structural steel, and for tanks of this type I would not recommend a material that is not typically used in pressure vessel applications - even for storage tanks.
