Hello, I'm an EE working on a robotics project and need to minimize the mass of a 5 inch squared, 1/4" thick plate currently made of 6061 aluminum by replacing it with a carbon composite plate. How can I best and most simply determine the thickness of a replacement carbon composite plate needed to achieve the same modulus of elasticity as the aluminum plate? I would add an additional thickness to the calculated thickness to add an additional safety margin. Thanks very much in advance for your help.

Well, do you care about in-plane axial modulus, or bending stiffness?
What composite material are you using - fabric or tape?
What composite layup are you using?
And is your “safety margin” stiffness or strength based?
