Alley Profile Question

I do a lot of alley reconstruction work. My question for you guys is that when you do this type of street rehab where the design speed is less than 25 MPH, what is the maximum grade break and distance you use. For example, for new construction, a never use more than a 0.50% grade break before I go to a vertical curve. Sometimes its hard fitting in vertical curves for this tight of area. It's easier to just use grade breaks, but I would like some criteria to use. Is a 1% gradebreak every 10-20 feet to0 jagged? Any thought would be appreciated.

From my experience, a vertical curve is only required when the grade break difference exceeds 1.0%.

Personally, I think alleys in a subdivision are a great idea. Garages and garbage cans can be located and kept at the back of the property, creating a more pleasant neighborhood.

Fine and dandy, if you have an HOA owning them. As long as my tax money doesn't have to plow and maintain them. And as long as my local gov't (and my tax money) isn't liable when someone gets hit, because of lack of manuever room and/or sight distance.
