I am having a problem with zinc plating contamination during a cold forming operation performed on a 12L14 steel part. Significant flaking occurs. I understand that the acid used to activate the part prior to plating could be a fluoboric acid to improve adherance due to its ability to etch the lead in the surface. I am looking for information on the specific effects of the acid on lead in the steel and why this would help. Also, is there information out there that would allow me to compare ductility of the zinc, chromate, and base material? And finally,is there information available on the microstructure of comercial zinc and chromate deposits?
