I want to use an aluminum sheet as a heat shield. Standoff will be 2" from exhaust pipe. What material grade is typically used and with what surface finish (i.e. AA3003, mill finish)?

Aluminium coated mild steel (ACMS) is used for motor car exhaust heat shields on vehicles that have limited exposure to road salt. Low grade ferritic stainless steel or aluminised stainless steel on applications subjected to a more severe environment.

Aluminium or aluminium alloy could soften with heat radiated from the exhaust pipe and produce part distortion.
Suggest you try the former options first.

Thanks gdodd. That's the type of response I was looking for.
