Design most efficient W10 Section for following loads.
P(r)=100 Kips
M(rx) = 50 kip ft

K L(x)= 21.6 ft.
KL(y) = 8.13 ft.

Trying to guess-timate a section to begin calcs

We know that p= 1.67/P(n)
And b(x) = (8*1.67)/(9*M(nx)

However having difficult time manipulating values to enter the Table without wasting much time on wrong trial sections. Help much appreciated.

What is this for? What purpose is the W10?

 
To resist Axial Force and Bending.
 
If forget about everything and just consider moment and axial force, how do you select trial section.
 
Well, if it is primarily a column (axial load is the major force) then you could start with finding a column section that is close and then calculate the beam-column interaction (AISC Specification chapter H) to see if it works.

If the bending is more significant, then start with the beam tables and then use Chapter H to check the interaction.

Again - what is the member to be used for? You are asking for help - how about a little background on it?
