Hi all,

Attached are some images of the window surrounds of a dash 8 aeroplane. I was wondering if anyone could give me an insight of how theyve managed to make this super lightweight panel so rigid. From my understanding that honey comb (anyone know what material that would be?) alone couldnt add rigidity? Because from my research the outer layers of sandwich panels are crucial for adding stiffness alike I beams, and as seen theres basically just fiberglass tape on the outside. So does that mean its not really a sandwich panel? So basically, please tell me anything interesting you know about how in aeroplanes they make their lightweight interior components so strong!

Thankyou

LukeMeche,

Most of the stiffness and strength of your panel comes from material at the top and bottom. Honeycomb is how they hollow out the structurally useless middle of the pane.
