Hi Guys!

I know 1144 is an oil quench material. I was just curious what happens if we air cool 1144?

Would it be still hardened ?

Thanks!

Thin parts? Forced air?
Might work.

1.5" thick, 14" long pin ?

No chance at 1.5" diameter in air.
Will it through harden even with an oil quench?

You mean it won't get hardened at all?

The outer surface will, but the properties through it will be lower, and maybe rather bad.
If this pin is going to be loaded you might want to re-think your grade.

I don't need to thru harden the pin. I need to case harden it, so I believe it will work then ?

Probably not; depends on the surface hardness and depth of hardness required.

Are you buying 1144, or "sress proof" ?

1144 should respond very much like 1045, a very common material for which there is an abundance of data.

You can expect hardness around 269 HBW (28 HRC) after air cool in this section size.
