Widen your scope of where you want to look for work. Most manufacturers have limited staffing resources and cannot afford either the additional supervision it takes for new grads, or are unwilling to take on additional product reliability risks associated with a lack of experience. Consulting engineering firms on the other hand are almost always looking for new talent at the lower end of their pay scale so that the PEs and other more experienced engineers can be best used as a revenue stream. What that means is that you will be doing grunt work (from an engineering standpoint) for at least 5 years, but after that you are a more valuable commodity.
